BACKSTAGE 20180823 “IMMORTAL SONGS FROM THE 60ies.”

Dear fashion & music lovers,

I wish you a sunny summer Thursday with music from the roaring 60ties!

Today’s story’s about some of my favorite immortal songs from the 60ies which are still a fixed feature of the playlists of worldwide radio stations until today.

Summer Wine” is a song written by Lee Hazlewood. It was originally sung by Suzi Jane Hokom and Lee Hazlewood in 1966, but it was made famous by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood in 1967. The Nancy & Lee version was originally released on Sinatra’s Nancy in London album in late 1966 and later as the B-side of her “Sugar Town” single in December 1966. The song itself became a hit, reaching #49 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in April 1967. It also reached #14 in Australia. In early 1968 “Summer Wine” was included on Sinatra and Hazlewood’s album of duets, Nancy & Lee LP. It was the first of Sinatra and Hazlewood’s string hit duets.

In May 2017, retail clothier, H&M, used Nancy & Lee’s version in their “The Summer Shop 2017” ad campaign and as a result, the track debuted at #1 on Billboard magazine and Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart for May 2017.

The Beat Goes On” is a Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit song written by Sonny Bono and recorded by Sonny & Cher. It was issued as a single and appeared on their 1967 album In Case You’re in Love. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January 14, 1967, peaking at number six.

1999 the movie “And The Beat Goes On: The Sonny And Cher Story” launched. Based on the autobiography of Sonny Bono, this film focuses on the volatile relationship between Sonny (Jay Underwood) and Cher (Renee Faia) during the early 60’s to their divorce in the late 70’s.

Diana Ernestine Earle Ross (born March 26, 1944) is an American singer, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Ross rose to fame as the lead singer of the vocal group “The Supremes”, which, during the 1960s, became Motown’s most successful act, and are the best charting girl group in US history, as well as one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time. The group released a record-setting twelve number-one hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including “Where Did Our Love Go”, “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In the Name of Love”, “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”, “Love Child”, and “Someday We’ll Be Together”.

Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien (16 April 1939 – 2 March 1999), professionally known as Dusty Springfield, was an English pop singer and record producer whose career extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her distinctive sensual mezzo-soprano sound, she was an important singer of blue-eyed soul and at her peak was one of the most successful British female performers, with six top 20 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the UK Singles Chart from 1963 to 1989. She is a member of the US Rock and Roll and UK Music Halls of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time. Her image, supported by a peroxide blonde bouffant hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, as well as her flamboyant performances made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties.

Born in Enfield to a family that enjoyed music, Springfield learned to sing at home. In 1958 she joined her first professional group, The Lana Sisters, and two years later formed a pop-folk vocal trio, The Springfields, with her brother Tom Springfield and Tim Field. They became the UK’s top selling act. Her solo career began in 1963 with the upbeat pop hit, “I Only Want to Be with You”. Among the hits that followed were “Wishin’ and Hopin’ ” (1964), “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself” (1964), “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” (1966), and “Son of a Preacher Man” (1968).

The Bee Gees were a pop music group formed in 1958. Their lineup consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio were successful for most of their decades of recording music, but they had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a popular music act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as prominent performers of the disco music era in the mid-to-late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies; Robin’s clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry’s R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. The Bee Gees wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists.

Here’s the group’s first UK No. 1 single “Massachusetts”, a No. 11 US hit (1968).

The bonus track of today is a legendary track from 1968 and shows us how rock music was born in the roaring 60ies.

I wish you a successful Thursday and come back soon with a new story about fashion & music.

BACKSTAGE 20180822 “GERMAN LOVE SONGS”

Dear fashion & music friends,

I wish you a beautiful Wednesday morning full of love!

How wonderfully romantic it sounds when a French lover tells the girl he desires his love. How fiery are the love songs of the Spanish cavaliers, and how irresistibly Italians worship their beloved and sing haunting songs of “Amore” to win the heart of the beloved. People say that the German language has too hard a sound to talk about feelings and to speak a love affirmation in German all too often sounds embarrassing. Here are some examples that should help you to form your own opinion about it.

Here’s the father of German Rock Music, Udo Lindenberg, singing a song about his rejected love. The video has incredible 14.941 video views on YouTube.  Unfair as I believe.

Here’re some of the most talented German musicians of the 90ies, the band “ECHT”.

Here’s Oli P. with a cover version of a legendary Herbert Groenemeyer song.

Roger Cicero with his biggest success “Zieh Die Schuhe Aus”.

Here’s “Bushido” with “I Love You”

The bonus track of yoday is an “Anti Love Song” by Charles Aznavour performed in German language.

The second bomus track of today ( because it’s about love ) is a love song of Austro Pop legend Georg Danzer.

I wish you a successful Wednesday and come back very soon with a new story about fashion & music.

BACKSTAGE 20180820 “The Story Of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music.”

Dear fashion & music friends,

I wish you a happy Monday morning and a good start into this new week with Bryan Ferry and “Roxy Music”.

Bryan Ferry (born 26 September 1945) is an English singer and songwriter. His voice has been described as an “elegant, seductive croon”. He also established a distinctive image and sartorial style; according to The Independent, Ferry and his contemporary David Bowie influenced a generation with both their music and their appearances, with cultural critic Peter York commenting he “should hang in the Tate”.

Described as ‘the most criminally overlooked designer in British fashion’, Antony Price put the ‘glam’ in Roxy Music’s ‘glam rock’. The designer’s fearless work with Roxy Music not only completely changed the image of rock into something altogether more, ahem, glam, but also paved the way for how fashion and music have become intrinsically linked. Had the era been slightly different, Price would no doubt have been inundated with offers at the time to back his eponymous occasion wear label – or handed the keys to a Paris couture house.

Ferry came to prominence as the lead vocalist and principal songwriter with the glam art rock band Roxy Music, achieving three no. 1 albums and 10 singles which reached the top 10 in the UK between 1972 and 1982. Their singles included “Virginia Plain”, “Street Life”, “Love is the Drug”, “Dance Away”, “Angel Eyes”, “ver You”, “Oh Yeah”, “Jealous Guy”, “Avalon”, and “More Than This”.

Ferry began his solo career in 1973, while still a member of Roxy Music. His early solo hits include “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”, “Let’s Stick Together” and “This Is Tomorrow”. Ferry disbanded Roxy Music following the release of their best-selling album Avalon in 1982 to concentrate on his solo career, releasing further singles such as “Slave to Love” and “Don’t Stop the Dance” and the UK no. 1 album Boys and Girls in 1985. When his sales as a solo artist and as a member of Roxy Music are combined, Ferry has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

For the video “Angel Eyes” the “Roxy Music” fashion designer Antony Price developed something which became famous very much later as “Victoria’s Secret Angels”.

As well as being a prolific songwriter himself, Ferry has recorded many cover versions of other artists’ songs, including standards from the Great American Songbook, in albums such as These Foolish Things (1973), Another Time, Another Place (1974) and As Time Goes By (1999), as well as Dylanesque (2007), an album of Bob Dylan covers.

Ferry formed Roxy Music with a group of friends and acquaintances, beginning with Graham Simpson, in November 1970. The line-up expanded to include saxophonist/oboist Andy Mackay and his acquaintance Brian Eno, who owned tape recorders and played Mackay’s synthesizer.

Other early members included timpanist Dexter Lloyd and ex-Nice guitarist David O’List, who were replaced respectively by Paul Thompson and Phil Manzanera before the band recorded its first album (early Peel Sessions for the UK’s BBC Radio 1 feature O’List’s playing).

Roxy Music’s first hit “Virginia Plain” made the UK top 5 in 1972, and was followed up with several hit singles and albums, with Ferry as their lead vocalist and instrumentalist (he taught himself the piano in his mid-twenties) and Eno contributing synthesizers backing.

After their second album, Brian Eno left Roxy Music, leaving Ferry its undisputed leader. Ferry started a parallel solo career in 1973, initially performing cover versions of old standards on albums such as These Foolish Things(1973) and Another Time, Another Place (1974), both of which reached the UK top 5. After the concert tour in support of their fifth studio album Siren, Roxy Music temporarily disbanded in 1976, though band members Paul Thompson, Phil Manzanera and Eddie Jobson took part in recording Ferry’s subsequent solo material. That year Ferry covered the Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” for the transitory musical documentary All This and World War II. He released three solo albums during this period, Let’s Stick Together (1976), In Your Mind (1977) and The Bride Stripped Bare (1978). All three albums reached the UK top 20.

Roxy Music reformed at the end of 1978 to record tracks for their sixth studio album Manifesto, which was released in early 1979 and reached no. 7 in the UK album charts, with Ferry, Manzanera, Thompson and Mackay. The follow-up was 1980’s Flesh + Blood, which reached no. 1 in the UK album charts, two years before the group’s final studio release Avalon in 1982, which also reached no. 1 in the UK album charts. The band also achieved their first and only UK no. 1 single, “Jealous Guy”, released in 1981 as a posthumous tribute to its author John Lennon, who had been murdered two months earlier. It was the only one of their singles not to be written or co-written by Ferry.

After lengthy tours to promote the Avalon album …

… Ferry decided to disband Roxy Music in 1983 and continue as a solo artist.

The bonus track of today is Bryan Ferry’s song for the film “Legend” (1986) by Ridley Scott. David Gilmour  (Pink Floyd) plays the lead guitar.

The second bonus track of today ( because it’s the beginning of a new week ) is John Lennon’s original version of “Jealous Guy” performed with the “Plastic Ono Band”.

I wish you a successful Monday and come back very soon with a new story about fashion & music.

BACKSTAGE 20180819 “Happy Birthday Coco Chanel – Her Favorite Song.”

Dear Coco Chanel fashion & music friends,

I wish you a relaxed Sunday morning!

Let’s celebrate Coco Chanel’s birthday, the birthday of a fascinating fashion icon, today.

Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, a woman ahead of her time. She was fiercely independent, worked her way up from the bottom, and fought against paralyzing constraints against women at the turn of the 20th century.

Gabrielle was sent to an orphanage run by strict nuns. She hated her years there, yet, inspired by her memories of the nuns who had raised her, and by servants’ uniforms, she decided to make black more chic by adding white at the neck and the cuffs. Then her signature monochrome look was born.

I have already said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute.

She had picked up the nickname Coco while singing in local nightclubs aged 18, where her favorite song was about a missing dog called Who’s Seen Coco In The Trocadero?. It  stayed with her forever.

It was through her singing that Coco met millionaire socialite and heir Etienne Balsan, who lifted her into the world of the upper classes to which she desperately wanted to belong.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

She was one of the first designers to adapt typically masculine clothing for women’s fashion, using elements from each of her lovers’ wardrobes. Wearing her own distinctive styles, Coco stood out from the other ladies in Balsan’s group and caught the eye of the man who was to become the love of her life, wealthy English polo player Arthur “Boy” Capel. He financed her first boutique in Paris’s Rue de Cambon in 1910.

The rest of the story is a legend.

Bonus track of today: 2016 the name “Coco Chanel” found it’s way into a Punjabi song.

I wish you a sunny Sunday and come back soon with a new story about fashion & music.

BACKSTAGE 20180816 “Happy birthday Madonna! Today’s Madonna’s 60th birthday: The pop superstar through the years.”

Dear fashion & music friends,

I wish you a beautiful Thursday morning!
@ our friends in Switzerland: Please don’t forget Superstar Justin Timberlake’ s live concert in Zurich today.

Happy birthday Madonna! Reinventing herself over 40 years, most people have experienced the release of new Madonna music at some point in their lives.

As Madonna turns 60 today, I take a look back at her most memorable moments, outfits and controversies. Here’s a look at her glittering career.

The bangles, lace and leggings phase.

The early 1980s saw Madonna thrown into the spotlight with her first number one single Holiday. Her debut Virgin Tour, supporting her first two albums, showcased the 27-year-old’s classic 1980s look comprised of lace, statement eye shadow, bold brows, fingerless gloves and and lots of fashion jewellery.

The blonde pixie phase.

Madonna’s spunky new look, her bleach blonde pixie cut, accompanied her third studio album, True Blue in 1986. She sported the do in her music videos, including for the title single and Papa Don’t Preach.

Back to black.

Three years after True Blue came Madonna’s fourth studio album, Like A Prayer – named after the influence of Catholicism on her early life. The album was dedicated to her mother, who died when she was young, and saw the pop star strip back to a natural image; dark hair and porcelain skin, with references to religion throughout the album.

The cone bra phase.

Unwittingly creating a go-to celebrity fancy dress costume that women would opt for for years to come, Madonna introduced the conic bra, designed by French designer Jean Paul Gaultier, during her Blonde Ambition tour in 1990. With slick back hair in a high, long blonde pony tail, Madonna made yet another bold style statement.

The Sex phase.

Madonna’s first book Sex was released alongside her fifth studio album Erotica in 1992. The book’s initial preview was hugely controversial. It showed her nude, wearing a rabbit’s tail, shaving the pubic hair of a naked man.

The tone-down phase.

Following the explicit Sex phase, Madonna softened her image with the release of her sixth album Bedtime Stories. Featuring pop and R&B styles, the singer put her dance/electronica sound on the back burner. She described the album as “a combination of pop, R&B, hip hop and a Madonna record. It’s very, very romantic”.

Evita.

Michelle Pfeiffer had originally been billed to play the lead in the film but dropped out before production. Madonna was cast after she wrote a long letter to the director convincing him she was perfect for the role. In the letter, she compared her life to Eva Peron’s; both lost a parent as a child, and both arrived young in the big city with no money or friends but managed to succeed.

The hippie phase.

Inspired by being a mother and doing yoga, the icon reinvented herself for her seventh album, Ray of Light. It was her motherhood album after giving birth to her daughter, Lourde.

The modern Music phase.

Music, her eighth album, had a modern, dance-pop and electronica vibe, with influences from rock, country and folk. Released in 2000, the same year she married English film director Guy Ritchie, the album set a record for Warner Music Group as the biggest album shipment in the company, with three million copies sold worldwide in the first week.

The Britney kiss.

After the release of her American Life album, Madonna opened the 2003 MTV VMAs with a performance of Like A Virgin and Hollywood with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott.  During the performance, Madonna kissed Britney and Christina, but it was the Britney kiss that made headlines.

The leotard and legs phase.

At age 50, Madonna came back on the airwaves with her dance/disco album Confessions On A Dance Floor. With a reinvention of ABBA’s Gimme Gimme Gimme, the pop star used the video to show age was just a number, as she flaunted her long toned legs in a pink leotard while she twirled around the dance floor.

The cool phase.

Her 11th album in 2008, Hard Candy, features vocal appearances by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West, and had a modern R&B club classics theme. Madonna showed that even 1980s pop icons are still relevant as she gained access to a new audience.

The current phase.

In her last major comeback in 2015, Madonna performed Living For Love from her thirteenth album Rebel Heart. During the performance she fell to the ground when a dancer attempted to remove her cape in a choreography move which went wrong.

The bonus track of today is an alternative version of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina performed by another of my favorite vocal artists, Sinead O’Connor.

I wish you a successful Thursday. Please don’t forget that Justin Timberlake’ s live in concert today in Zurich and Saturday, August 18th, in Vienna. I’ll come back very soon with the new syroy about fashion & music.
